About Us

The Shooting Star Basketball Association (SSBA) endeavours to bring quality basketball experiences to youth in the West Hants Municipality and surrounding communities by inspiring exuberance, enthusiasm, excitement and love for the great sport of basketball. This zeal and zest is motivated by allowing all children the opportunity to play no matter their skill level. As Pat Riley said and we believe, "Great efforts springs naturally from great attitude."

We offer a chance for kids to play basketball at a variety of age levels:

  • Little Dribblers (ages 5, 6, & 7 as of Jan.1, 2024)
  • U10 / Junior Mini (ages 8 & 9 as of Jan. 1, 2024)
  • U12 / Mini (ages 10 & 11 as of Jan. 1, 2024)
  • U14 / Bantam (ages 12 & 13 as of Jan. 1, 2024)
  • U16 / Midget (ages 14 & 15 as of Jan. 1, 2024)

All SSBA teams (U10 and up) will play in the Metro League. All games will take place in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).

SSBA is a part of Canada Basketball Verification and we take the Canada Basketball Member Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Pledge.

We acknowledge that Shooting Star Basketball Association is located in Mi'kma'ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq people and we acknowledge them as the past, present, and future caretakers. We are all treaty people.

We also acknowledge that African Nova Scotians are a distinct people whose histories, legacies, and contributions have enriched that part of Mi'kma'ki known as Nova Scotia for over 400 years.

About the teams:

Little Dribblers have their own schedule for start up times, usually starting mid-October. It is a 12-week program offered on Saturday mornings. The focus of the time is to provide fun activities while learning how to run, jump and gain hand-eye coordination. Learning how to dribble, pass and catch a basketball are priorities. We will do some shooting as well, but game play is not a priority at the level.

U10-U18 teams generally start in the third week of October with league play starting by late October or early November. Teams play in the Metro Basketball League and all games will take place in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).
